Wow Wow Wow. I'm addicted. The whole contest is fantastic, but obviously I'm only really that interested because Great Britain is doing fabulously well. There's been a twinge in my chest for a few days and I finally realised it's joy, absolute joy at the British men and women going toe to toe with the rest of the world and performing better than even the most jingoistic optimist could have expected. Everywhere you turn there's brilliance - the 10k swimmers were just wonderful.
My own Olympic challenge is more mundane - deciding which of the two athletes below are most wonderful. The 6'4" Croatian High Jumper Blanka Mladic, or the statuesque Russian Pole Vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva. Both at the top of their sports, both consummate professionals, both rivettingly attractive and both clearly bonkers. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.

Success brings out the patriot in all of us, I suspect. Sailing and Cycling are the new last refuges (?) of scoundrels.
I almost - almost! - got a little leaky around the eyes watching Mr. Hoy blow all and sundry off the track. Thankfully I managed to hang on to my man card by simple expedient of stabbing myself briskly and repeatedly in the thigh with a paring knife while chanting "He's Scottish, he's Scottish" to myself.
